Spermiogram:
A spermiogram is always performed as a basic diagnostic test of sperm samples. Spermiograms are usually performed in order to check male fertility, but can also be used to obtain information about other disorders of the male reproductive system. The test is subjective, as it lacks standards for comparison, and must therefore be performed by trained personnel in suitably equipped laboratories using the indicated methods – those suggested by the World Health Organization – in strict adherence to the applicable rules for quality control and quality assurance.

– INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE THE SPERMIOGRAM
Before the spermiogram test, a number of conditions should be met in order to obtain an evaluable result.
• Abstinence from sexual activity for 3-7 days
• The sample shall be collected in a dedicated room in the laboratory or at home, provided that the sample can be taken to the laboratory within one hour, maintaining the required temperature.
• When collecting the sample, special caution must be paid to preserve the first drop of the ejaculation.
• Fever and drug use require special attention, as they may have a negative influence on the quality of the sperm
It’s a known fact that the same man does not always produce the same amount of sperm. This variation can be significant and the spermiogram often has to be repeated 2 or 3 times.

– SPERMIOGRAM MEASUREMENTS
For a sperm sample to be fertile, it needs to contain a satisfying amount of sperm cells that are sufficiently motile so they can reach the ovum, and have a good morphology in order to fertilize it.
For this reason, the parameters checked in the spermiogram are::
• the number of sperm cells that are present in the sample;
• the motility of the sperm cells;
• the vitality of the sperm cells;
• and the morphology of the sperm cells.
Other cells that may also be present in the sperm sample, such as round cells – polymorphonuclear leukocytes or immature germ cells – provide us with useful information. These cells are also recorded in the result and can help the clinical physician to correctly evaluate the quality of the sample.

Our laboratory has a dedicated sperm collection room. An appointment will be necessary..
